Exam Briefing

Built from three sources: your faculty's in-class briefing recording (19 min, 2 September), the two most recent OM question papers, and the official SYNOPTICS answer keys published with them. Read this page before you read anything else β€” two things about the test have changed.

⚠ Two changes that affect how you should study

1. The portion is Units 1–7, not 1–10. Your faculty states it twice in the briefing, and confirms at the end that job sequencing and scheduling is not included.

2. There is no numerical solving. Not in Unit 1 productivity, not in Unit 4 location methods, not in Unit 5 layout. Questions are application-oriented instead.

Units 8, 9 and 10 are still on this site, untouched, for the Term End Examination β€” but they are outside this test.

What is in the portion

Unit-to-chapter mapping is from the course policy instruction plan Policy pp. 3–4. The Ch. 14 detail for Unit 7 is from the briefing: "that will be chapter 14 in your textbook, the initial 4 to 5 pages which I have conveyed in the PPTs."

No numerical solving β€” what replaces it

This is the single biggest change, and your faculty returns to it four separate times in nineteen minutes.

"Productivity β€” we have practised some numericals, but when we approach the question it may not be solving the numericals as such, it might be application oriented … So no need to memorize the formula and solving, but how the solutions or the outcome, how it is applied in the situation and how it is related to the concept β€” this is what you need to focus." ✍ So what will they ask instead?

Your faculty describes the replacement question style precisely:

  • Given an output or a value, relate it back to the formula. "I might be giving you some output or values and ask you to relate it to the formula. So that would be the pattern." β€” you must know what each term means and what the result implies, not how to compute it.
  • Given a scenario, identify which method applies and justify why. "I can give you some examples and ask you to fit those to which type of method might be applicable and why β€” or if centre of gravity is used in a particular situation, why did we choose the centre of gravity method; or if the distance–load calculations are used, then how is it relevant in that scenario."
  • Given a concept, explain it with an example β€” or the reverse, "an example and relate to concept. So in both ways you must keep some examples handy."

Practical translation: for every formula in Units 1–7 you should be able to say, in one sentence each β€” what it measures, what makes it go up or down, what a high or low value tells a manager, and when you would use it in preference to an alternative. You do not need to be able to compute it under time pressure.

Mark distribution

"Mark distribution would be β€” 2 marks questions, 3 or 4 marks, and 5 marks; maximum is 5 marks. So mostly it would be 2 and 4, but at least 1 or 2 questions would be 5 marks also." Briefing recording, 15:08–15:29

The Mid-Term Test carries 20 marks in total Policy p. 7. Putting the two together:

Note this is a different shape from the Term End paper, which uses 2.5-mark and 5-mark parts within 10-mark questions. The analysis in the next section is drawn from the TEE papers because those are the only published OM papers β€” but the style of question carries over directly, and it is the style, not the mark value, that you should calibrate to.

What the past papers actually look like

Two OM papers have been published for 2025–26 β€” the Final Examination (28 Nov 2025) and the Re-Examination (05 Feb 2026), both 2 hours and 50 marks, with Q1 compulsory and any 4 of Q2–Q7. Here is every question from both, sorted by the kind of thinking it demands rather than by unit.

Read that last row carefully. Seven of the roughly thirty question-parts in the two past papers were pure numericals β€” and every one of them is the kind your faculty has now ruled out. Strip those out and what remains is almost entirely explain-with-example, compare, and apply-to-scenario. That residue is exactly what your test will be made of.

Which of your in-scope units the past papers drew on

Filtering both papers down to Units 1–7 only:

  • Unit 1 β€” productivity indices; manufacturing vs service organisations; goods vs services and the goods–service continuum
  • Unit 2 β€” operations strategy and competitiveness; quality-based and time-based strategies; vision / mission / strategy
  • Unit 4 β€” location factors for retail vs heavy industry; factors for retail and service facilities
  • Unit 5 β€” importance of layout design; process vs product layout; service layouts (free-flow, grid, loop, spine)
  • Unit 6 β€” types of production systems (project, job shop, batch, mass) and their process characteristics
  • Unit 7 β€” stockout costs; hidden costs of inventory; importance of inventory planning, ordering, storage and control

Unit 3 (process analysis, Little's Law, bottleneck/throughput) did not appear in either published paper β€” but your faculty discusses it at length in the briefing and says explicitly that "it can be an application based question on Little's law." Do not skip it.

How to write the answer β€” from the official SYNOPTICS

The SYNOPTICS documents are the marking keys published alongside each paper. They show the form an answer is expected to take, and the form is remarkably consistent. Five patterns cover almost every answer in both keys.

Pattern 1 β€” Bullet points, not paragraphs

Almost nothing in the keys is written as continuous prose. Answers are lists. The key for "Explain two important factors while selecting the location for retail and service facilities" is literally six bullets:

  • Proximity to customers β€” near as much as possible
  • Location is everything
  • Construction costs β€” less important
  • Land costs β€” usually high
  • Labor costs β€” less important
  • Transportation β€” well connected

Take-away: a bulleted answer is not a shortcut, it is the expected format. Write in points. One idea per bullet, each bullet a complete thought.

Pattern 2 β€” Tables for anything comparative

Every "compare", "distinguish", or "differences between" answer in both keys is a table. Manufacturing vs service organisations is an 8-row table. Reorder point vs EOQ is a table with a Basis column β€” Meaning, Purpose, Depends On, Focus, Example. Process vs product layout is a table with Definition, Example, Advantages, Disadvantages.

Take-away: if the verb is compare / distinguish / differentiate, draw a table with a named basis-of-comparison column. It is faster to write, easier to mark, and it is what the key does.

Pattern 3 β€” Named sub-headings for multi-part questions

For "Analyze the importance of inventory planning, ordering, storage, and control in an FMCG company", the key does not write four paragraphs. It writes four numbered sub-headings β€” 1. Inventory Planning, 2. Ordering, 3. Storage, 4. Inventory Control β€” each with three sub-bullets underneath.

Take-away: when a question names its own parts, use those exact words as your sub-headings. The examiner is looking for them.

Pattern 4 β€” Every concept carries a concrete example

Process layout β†’ "hospitals". Product layout β†’ "automobile manufacturing". Job shop β†’ "tailor-made furniture". Batch β†’ "bakery, pharma". Mass β†’ "automobile assembly lines, packaged food". Waiting muda β†’ "machine downtime in pharma plant". The examples are short β€” two or three words β€” but they are always there.

Take-away: you do not need elaborate case studies. You need one named, specific, industry-appropriate example attached to every concept, and you need it to come to mind instantly.

Pattern 5 β€” Definition first, then elaboration

Nearly every answer opens with one sentence that defines the term, then expands. "Operations strategy defines how an organization uses its operations (processes, capabilities, resources) to support overall business strategy and to deliver value to customers over the long term." Then, and only then, the detail.

Take-away: lead with the definition. In a 2-mark question it may be most of the answer; in a 5-mark question it earns the first mark and frames everything after it.

  1. Definition β€” one sentence, the textbook/PPT wording.
  2. Body in points β€” bullets if the question is "explain / discuss / list"; a table if it is "compare / distinguish"; named sub-headings if the question names its own parts.
  3. Example β€” one named company or industry, tied to the specific point it illustrates.
  4. Implication β€” one closing line on why it matters to the operations manager. This is what separates a 4 from a 5.

Keep your examples ready in advance

This is a time-management instruction, not a content one. Inventing an example in the exam hall costs you minutes you do not have in a 20-mark test. Two things are explicitly sanctioned as example sources:

  • The cases discussed in class β€” "the cases which we discussed right from the beginning, all those cases can apply for these different units, keep them handy." The Amazon India case in your folder is one of these; it is written up on the Case-Based Questions page.
  • Your own project company β€” you have already researched a manufacturing company and a service company for the project, so you know their details cold. That is the cheapest example to deploy under time pressure.

Which source to study from

"While reading the textbook … chapters may contain more aspects in any one chapter. So those aspects you can read for understanding, but while learning you can strictly go with the contents in the PPTs and corresponding reading from the chapters." Briefing recording, 13:06–13:48
"Reading textbook is essential, but learning from the textbook β€” only the contents which are from the PPTs and the relevant [ones] … explain or learn all the concepts with examples, in that case even if the cases come you are related to it." Briefing recording, 14:34–15:08

The instruction is about boundary-setting, not about quality. The textbook chapters cover more ground than the course does; the PPT defines where the course stopped. So:

  • Use the PPT to decide what is examinable. If a topic is in the chapter but was never in a slide, it is background reading.
  • Use the textbook to actually understand those topics, and for the precise wording and the worked examples.
  • Unit 7 is the exception β€” PPT only. "For the mid-term test you can refer to the PPT … chapter unit 7 strictly you can refer to only PPTs, but all other chapters along with PPT reading and cases also." The relevant textbook material is just the first 4–5 pages of Ch. 14.

Final checklist

  • Study Units 1–7 only. Units 8–10 are on this site for the TEE, not for this test.
  • Do not drill numericals. For each formula, know what it measures, what moves it, what a value implies, and when to prefer it over the alternative.
  • Write in points. Tables for comparisons, sub-headings for multi-part questions.
  • One named example per concept, memorised in advance β€” from class cases or your project company.
  • Lead with the definition, close with the managerial implication.
  • Budget by marks: 2-mark β‰ˆ 4 points, 4-mark β‰ˆ 6 points + example, 5-mark β‰ˆ 8 points under sub-headings.
